Patna: Bihar has launched a state-wide plantation drive under the Van Mahotsav campaign, setting an ambitious target to plant five crore (50 million) saplings over the next three months. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar kickstarted the initiative by planting a sapling on July 13, marking the beginning of the drive aligned with the monsoon season.
The campaign aims to enhance forest cover and promote environmental awareness, with a diverse mix of species including teak, mahogany, silk cotton, jamun, and arjun to be planted.
According to the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Forest Department alone will plant 1.07 crore saplings. The remaining plantation efforts will be supported by departments such as Rural Development and organisations including Jeevika groups, MNREGA, schools, colleges, farmers and social bodies. Jeevika will contribute 57 lakh saplings, MNREGA 1.93 lakh, schools and colleges 37.16 lakh, while farmers are expected to plant 56 lakh.
So far, 30 lakh saplings have been planted in July. To encourage farmer participation, the government has proposed a financial incentive – Rs 10 per sapling for protection, followed by an additional Rs 60 per tree after three years.
In a major step to involve young people, every student in government schools and colleges will receive two saplings for free. Additionally, saplings will be distributed to the public under the “Mission Meri Life” campaign, with five free saplings offered to those who join the plantation drive. District nurseries have been stocked with various species, and residents can inquire via the helpline 0612-2226911.
