Patna: Bihar has recorded a huge increase in violent crimes over the past year, according to the latest report released by the National Crime Records Bureau. The figures have raised serious concerns about law and order in the state, especially as cases involving murder, kidnapping and juvenile crime continue to rise rapidly. While the overall crime rate in Bihar is still lower than the national average, the sudden jump in heinous crimes has become a major issue for both the government and the public.
According to the NCRB-2024 report, Bihar recorded more than 107,000 cases of violent and heinous crimes in 2024. In comparison, the state had registered 52,165 such cases in 2023. This means violent crimes increased by nearly 105% within just one year. Crimes such as murder, rape, dacoity and attempted murder have shown a major rise. The report also revealed that the rate of heinous crimes in Bihar now stands at 83 cases per 100,000 population. Even the state capital, Patna, saw a sharp increase in serious crimes, with cases rising from 1,935 in 2023 to 5,035 in 2024.
One of the most worrying parts of the report is the rise in crimes involving minors. Bihar has emerged as the state with the highest number of juvenile offenders in the country. In 2024, the state recorded 5,037 cases involving children and teenagers in criminal activities. In 2023, the number was 1,818, showing an increase of around 177%. The report suggests that more teenagers are becoming involved in serious offences such as attempted murder and kidnapping. Experts believe social pressure, unemployment, poor education and lack of opportunities may be pushing many young people toward crime.
The report also highlighted a disturbing rise in crimes involving young murder victims. In 2024, Bihar recorded 1,058 murder cases involving people aged between 18 and 30 years. Along with this, 131 child victims were also reported across the state. In Patna alone, 72 young people were murdered during the year. Crimes against women have also increased, adding to concerns over public safety and the effectiveness of policing in several districts.
Bihar has also reported the highest number of teenage involvement in attempted murder cases in the country. Out of 2,004 such cases registered nationwide, 673 were from Bihar alone. The state also topped the list in kidnapping for marriage cases involving teenagers, with 257 incidents reported in 2024. Uttar Pradesh followed Bihar in such cases. The report has now triggered fresh political debate, with opposition leaders questioning the state government’s handling of law and order, while officials say stronger action and better policing measures are being planned to control the rising violence.
