Patna: Bihar is bracing for a spell of intense rainfall and thunderstorms as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, which is expected to strengthen into a depression by October 2.
The Patna Meteorological Centre said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in most districts of north and east Bihar, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, avoid open spaces and trees during lightning, and seek safe shelter.
Districts including Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, and Katihar have been placed on alert for torrential rainfall, while western districts such as Bhojpur, Buxar, Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, and Arwal may see only light showers. Moderate rainfall is forecast elsewhere.
In Patna, conditions are expected to remain cloudy with drizzle and thundershowers during Dussehra, while temperatures are set to fall by two to three degrees, bringing temporary relief from humidity. However, officials warned that torrential rain could cause waterlogging across city roads.
The IMD also flagged the risk of rising river levels in Bihar’s Terai region due to heavy rainfall in neighbouring Nepal.
Over the past 24 hours, scattered showers were reported across the state: Muzaffarpur recorded 7.6 mm, East Champaran 3.8 mm, Sitamarhi 2.8 mm, Khagaria 1 mm, and Samastipur 0.4 mm. Patna logged a maximum temperature of 35°C, while Motihari was the hottest at 38°C.
