Patna: The spell of thunderstorms and rain continued across Bihar on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for 24 districts in the state. The weather department has warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph.
Officials have urged residents to remain alert and avoid open areas during lightning activity.
Over the past 24 hours, several parts of Bihar witnessed intense weather conditions. Patna experienced heavy rainfall along with hailstorms, while districts including West Champaran, Kishanganj, Supaul, Araria, and Khagaria also received significant rainfall. Cloudy conditions prevailed in many other districts.
Two people died after being struck by lightning in Purnia district, while a woman sustained injuries in Supaul due to lightning-related incidents.
186% More Rainfall Than Normal
According to weather department data, Bihar recorded 94.5 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours against the normal average of 32.1 mm. This marks nearly 186 percent excess rainfall during the period.
The continuous rainfall has brought relief from the intense summer heat across the state. However, it has also caused widespread disruption and losses for farmers.
Crop Damage Reported Across Bihar
Farmers have reported heavy losses due to persistent rain and strong winds. Standing crops in fields have been submerged, while harvested wheat lying in open areas has been damaged due to moisture.
Vegetable growers have been particularly affected as waterlogging has started rotting crops in several districts. Strong winds and storms have flattened crops at multiple locations, raising concerns over reduced agricultural output.
Fruit crops such as mango and litchi have also suffered damage, with raw fruits falling prematurely because of gusty winds. Water accumulation in agricultural fields has further impacted preparations for sowing activities.
Rain Likely for Next 2–3 Days
The IMD has forecast similar weather conditions across Bihar for the next two to three days. Light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected in several districts during this period. Weather conditions are likely to improve gradually after that.
Patna Weather Forecast
Cloudy skies are expected to persist in Patna on Thursday. However, no significant rainfall is likely in the state capital today. Humid conditions may continue, with maximum temperatures expected to remain between 34 and 38 degrees Celsius.
Heatwave Conditions May Return Soon
Meteorologists have warned that temperatures could rise sharply once rainfall activity reduces after the next few days. From the second week of May, Bihar may once again witness severe heatwave conditions and soaring temperatures.
