Patna: Veteran politician Bijendra Prasad Yadav has taken oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, marking the most significant moment of his long political career. A senior leader of the Janata Dal (United), Yadav has been a familiar and steady face in Bihar politics for more than three decades. His elevation is being seen as recognition of his long public service and his strong connection with the Kosi region, especially Supaul, from where he has been elected eight times in a row.
Yadav’s political journey began during the historic JP Movement, which inspired many young leaders to enter public life. He later moved into electoral politics and first won an Assembly seat in 1990. Since then, he has never lost an election from his constituency. Over the years, he has worked under different governments in Bihar and also served as Minister of State for Energy during the tenure of leaders like Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, gaining experience in administration and governance.
A major turning point came in 2005 when Nitish Kumar became Chief Minister of Bihar. At that time, Yadav was serving as the state president of JD(U) and played an important role in strengthening the party’s organisation. Gradually, he became one of Nitish Kumar’s most trusted leaders. His long record of electoral victories, often against strong candidates from the Congress, RJD, and BJP, has made him one of the most consistent performers in Bihar politics.
Popularly known as the ‘Vishwakarma of Kosi’, Yadav is credited with helping improve infrastructure and power supply in his region. During his tenure as Energy Minister, he earned the reputation of being the “Energy Man” of Bihar due to improvements in electricity distribution and related reforms. His leadership in the energy department has been widely recognised as one of his key contributions to the state’s development.
With his appointment as Deputy Chief Minister, Yadav is expected to take on wider responsibilities beyond his earlier portfolio. Supporters in the Kosi region have welcomed his elevation, celebrating what they see as the success of a leader who has grown with his constituency. His journey from a student activist in the JP Movement to one of the top posts in Bihar government reflects both persistence and long-term public trust.
