Patna: Chirag Paswan, president of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and a union minister, has said that Bihar’s liquor prohibition law requires “rectification” and better implementation, arguing that while its intent is not flawed, its execution has created serious challenges.
Speaking to reporters in Patna on Monday, Paswan said the law had led to “ruin in many households” and urged the state government to review how it is enforced at the ground level. He also called for stronger action to prevent the smuggling and cross-border inflow of alcohol into Bihar.
“There are flaws in the law that need to be corrected. The intention behind it is not wrong, but its implementation has caused difficulties,” he said.
Paswan also commented on enforcement actions against encroachment in the state, backing the position of Bihar chief minister Samrat Choudhary, who he said had made it clear that illegal constructions would not be tolerated. He supported strict action against unauthorised structures as part of ongoing demolition drives.
The remarks come amid continued political debate over Bihar’s prohibition policy, which has been in force since 2016 and has faced criticism over enforcement challenges, alleged illicit liquor trade, and its social impact.
