Patna: Computer education will be fully implemented in government schools in Bihar for students from Classes 1 to 8 starting from the new academic session in April 2026. The subject will also include half-yearly and annual examinations, officials said.
The move comes after an earlier plan to introduce the computer curriculum for Classes 6 to 8 in 2025 could not be implemented due to a shortage of textbooks. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has now decided to roll out the curriculum from April 1, 2026.
Officials said the process of distributing textbooks, including computer science and other subjects, has already begun in various blocks of Patna district.
Focus on basic computer literacy
According to SCERT, the initiative aims to equip students with basic computer knowledge and improve digital literacy among children studying in government schools, where students were previously lagging behind in computer education.
Under the new curriculum, students will learn the importance and practical use of computers in daily life. The syllabus will introduce them to computer operations, basic rules of usage, and operating systems. Students will also be taught about multitasking, file management, and the role of user interfaces.
In addition, the course will cover essential precautions to avoid cybercrime and strategies to stay safe online. Students will also be introduced to emerging technologies such as cloud computing.
Computer classes to be part of weekly timetable
SCERT officials said computers are being made available in schools for students from Classes 6 to 8. Computer teachers will also be appointed with the support of an agency to provide training and guidance to students.
Like other subjects, computer education will be incorporated into the weekly timetable. Students will attend regular computer classes and will be evaluated through scheduled examinations during the academic year.
Class 6 syllabus structure
The Class 6 computer syllabus will be structured month-wise. In April, students will be introduced to computers, followed by lessons on computer components in May and June. In July, students will learn basic computer operations, while August will focus on digital drawing.
A half-yearly assessment will be conducted in September 2026. Lessons on Microsoft Word will be taught during October and November, followed by applications of information and communication technology in December.
In January, students will study digital citizenship and cyber security, while February will focus on emerging trends in information and communication technology. The annual examination will be conducted in March 2027.
