Darbhanga/Patna: Darbhanga airport is set to expand beyond passenger operations, with plans moving forward to establish a Flying Training Organisation (FTO) within the airport premises.
Officials said the Bihar government and the Union ministry of civil aviation have reached an in-principle agreement on the proposal, marking a key step towards creating a pilot training facility in north Bihar.
If approved, the institute would make Darbhanga a dual-purpose aviation hub for both commercial travel and pilot training.
Second FTO planned in Bihar
The proposed facility is expected to become Bihar’s second FTO, reducing the need for aspiring pilots in the state to travel elsewhere for training.
Officials said the institute could offer local students access to aviation training infrastructure closer to home, potentially lowering logistical and financial barriers for those seeking careers in the sector.
The project is also expected to strengthen Bihar’s aviation ecosystem, which currently has limited pilot training infrastructure.
Expansion linked to airport development plans
The proposed FTO is part of broader efforts to expand Darbhanga airport and improve its long-term aviation capacity.
Authorities view the training institute as a strategic addition that could support the airport’s future integration with larger domestic and possible international aviation networks.
Darbhanga has seen a steady rise in passenger traffic in recent years, emerging as an important air connectivity point for the Mithila region.
Employment opportunities likely to grow
Officials said the institute could generate employment across multiple segments of the aviation industry.
These may include positions for flight instructors, technical staff, maintenance personnel, ground staff and support services.
Local youth are also expected to benefit through direct and indirect employment linked to airport operations and training activities.
Boost for Mithila’s aviation profile
The establishment of an FTO is expected to add a new dimension to Darbhanga airport’s role in the region.
Beyond passenger services, the airport could emerge as a centre for aviation education and skill development, strengthening Mithila’s position in Bihar’s growing air transport sector.
