Patna: The Central government has approved the proposed Delhi–Lucknow–Varanasi–Patna–Siliguri high-speed rail corridor, paving the way for around 400 km of bullet train infrastructure in Bihar.
According to the project proposal, the 1,705-km corridor will strengthen high-speed rail connectivity between Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Preliminary work on the project has begun, with detailed planning expected to continue in the coming phases.
Around 400 Km Of Track Planned In Bihar
Officials said approximately 400 km of the proposed corridor will pass through Bihar.
The Railways plans to develop stations at intervals of around 100 to 150 km along the route. In Bihar, stations have been proposed in Patna, Buxar and Katihar.
The project is expected to improve connectivity within Bihar as well as links with neighbouring states.
Faster Travel Between Major Cities
According to the proposed operational plan, the bullet train is expected to significantly reduce travel times between major cities.
The journey between Patna and Delhi, currently taking around 13 to 15 hours by conventional rail services, is projected to take about 4 hours and 41 minutes. Travel from Patna to Varanasi is expected to take around 50 minutes, while the journey to Siliguri could be completed in approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes.
These travel times are based on project estimates and will depend on the final alignment, operational schedules and technical specifications.
Expected Economic Impact
Officials believe the corridor could support economic activity in districts along the route by improving transport connectivity.
The project is also expected to facilitate the development of logistics and industrial hubs near proposed stations in Patna, Buxar and Katihar. Improved rail connectivity may also reduce travel time for passengers commuting for education, healthcare and business purposes.
Project To Link Four States
Once completed, the high-speed rail corridor will connect Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal through a dedicated bullet train network.
The project forms part of the Centre’s broader plans to expand high-speed rail infrastructure across the country. Further details on construction timelines and implementation are expected to be announced as the project progresses.
