Patna: A case has been filed against Jyoti Singh, the wife of Bhojpuri actor and independent Karakat candidate Pawan Singh, for allegedly violating the model code of conduct during the Bihar Assembly elections. The complaint was filed by Prabhat Kumar, the Sub-Divisional Officer of Bikramganj and Returning Officer for the Karakat constituency. According to officials, the alleged violation took place during an inspection at the Vindhyavasini Hotel at around 12:25 a.m. on November 11th. Authorities claimed that several people from outside the area were found staying with Jyoti Singh for campaigning purposes, even though the official election campaign had already ended on November 9th.
Officials said that when the inspection team reached the hotel, Jyoti Singh did not cooperate and allegedly created obstacles during the inquiry. Following this, the returning officer filed a written complaint, and an FIR was registered against her. The case has added to the already tense political atmosphere in Karakat, where the contest between candidates has been intense. The administration has stated that it will take appropriate legal action as per the election guidelines to ensure a fair voting process.
However, Jyoti Singh has strongly denied all allegations. In a video message posted on her Facebook page, she accused the administration of deliberately targeting her to harass and defame her. Singh claimed that the raid at her hotel was conducted without a female constable present, which, she said, was against the rules and meant to intimidate her. She described the incident as a conspiracy to suppress her voice and alleged that she was kept under pressure for several hours during the inspection. Her emotional video quickly went viral, gaining support from many of her followers and creating a buzz on social media.
After the video spread widely, Bikramganj Sub-Divisional Magistrate Prabhat Kumar spoke to reporters at the Dhangai polling station on Tuesday. His press byte, however, drew attention because Election Commission rules prohibit any media interaction within 100 metres of a polling booth. During his statement, the SDM defended the inspection and said legal action would be taken if false statements or misinformation were circulated. The matter has now become a major talking point in Karakat, where supporters of both sides are accusing each other of misuse of power and political bias.
