Bodhgaya: IIM Bodhgaya’s CSR Committee, ‘Pragati’, in partnership with the Lenskart Foundation, has successfully concluded a three-day eye screening and free eyeglass distribution programme in Gaya district, aimed at improving rural eye health and raising awareness about vision care.
The camp, held between September 17 and 19 across the villages of Turi Khurd, Bapunagar, Mahudar, and Turi Buzurg, saw over 800 residents receive free eye examinations. Of these, 245 individuals were provided with eyeglasses at a distribution ceremony on October 22.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Prof Vinita S. Sahay, Director of IIM Bodhgaya, with active involvement from Prof Suresh K.G., Chairperson of the CSR Committee, and Prof Ajit Tom James, Co-Chairperson. The Lenskart Foundation facilitated the medical logistics and support for the initiative.
The camp adopted the Drishti Didi model, which trains local women to conduct primary eye screenings and connect villagers with health services. The approach not only addresses vision problems but also promotes women’s leadership within the community.
An elderly participant, who received glasses, said: “Before, I couldn’t see distant objects clearly, but now everything is clear. Having this facility in our village is a great relief.”
Prof Sahay highlighted the social impact of the initiative, stating: “Through this programme, we have tried to bring light, hope and confidence into people’s lives.” Prof Suresh K.G. added: “This is an important step towards empowering rural communities and ensuring their health needs are met.”
