Patna: Fresh anxiety has gripped a village in Jehanabad district after a threatening note was discovered at the ancestral home of a NEET aspirant whose death in Patna last month is now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The handwritten slip, found on the kitchen window around 11am on Saturday, carried a blunt warning: “If you try too hard, you will be picked up and killed.” The message has left the student’s family shaken.
What has heightened concern is that the house has been under police protection for nearly a week. An inspector, two home guards and a watchman have been stationed at the premises since the case escalated, making the appearance of the note particularly troubling for the family.
The Shakurabad police station officer, Rahul Kumar, visited the village after being informed and seized the note for examination. “The slip is being verified. Prima facie, it appears to be the work of anti-social elements. Its authenticity will be established soon,” he said.
The student, who had been living at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Patna while preparing for the NEET examination, was found unconscious in her room on 6 January. She later died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Initially described by police as a suspected suicide, the case took a dramatic turn after the postmortem report indicated sexual assault. The family alleged that she had been raped and murdered, prompting protests and calls for a more transparent investigation.
Following public pressure, the case was first examined by Patna police and then by a special investigation team (SIT). After forensic tests reportedly confirmed the presence of male biological material on the student’s clothing, DNA samples were collected from more than a dozen individuals for comparison.
Earlier this month, members of the family staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding justice and calling for the investigation to be monitored by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court or high court. They have questioned the conduct of the police, the hostel authorities and medical personnel involved.
