Patna: Residents across Bihar are likely to receive relief from intense heat and heatwave conditions as the Southwest Monsoon is expected to enter the state before June 15, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The Meteorological Centre in Patna stated that the monsoon is likely to arrive on schedule this year. Officials, however, cautioned that thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall are expected to continue in several districts before the monsoon’s arrival and for a few days afterwards.
According to IMD forecasts, the effects of lower-than-normal rainfall predicted across parts of the country could also influence weather patterns in Bihar during the monsoon season.
Heatwave Conditions Expected to Subside
The Meteorological Centre said the heatwave conditions experienced in several districts over the past few days are now expected to weaken gradually.
Officials noted that some parts of South Bihar, including Kaimur district, may continue to experience humid weather and daytime temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius before the monsoon arrives. However, the department clarified that no heatwave conditions are currently expected in any district of the state.
Bihar is unlikely to witness further heatwave conditions this season, although intermittent humidity may persist in some regions.
Thunderstorms and Lightning Activity to Continue
The department has forecast continued weather activity involving thunder, lightning, and light rainfall across various districts until the onset of the monsoon.
According to officials, fluctuating weather patterns accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning have already been observed in several parts of Bihar over the past week. Similar conditions are expected to continue in the coming days.
The Meteorological Centre has advised residents to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions and avoid open fields during thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
Bihar’s Monsoon Timeline
The Southwest Monsoon generally enters Bihar between June 10 and June 12 each year. However, in 2025, the monsoon reached the state nine days later than usual.
Officials said Kishanganj district, located along the West Bengal border, serves as the entry point for the monsoon into Bihar. Last year, the monsoon remained stalled over northern parts of West Bengal for nearly 11 days, contributing to the delayed arrival in the state.
According to official records, the earliest arrival of the monsoon in Bihar was recorded on June 6, 2006.
Advisory Issued for Public Safety
The Meteorological Department has appealed to residents to remain alert during periods of thunderstorm and lightning activity.
Officials advised people not to take shelter under trees or utility poles during storms and to move to safer locations whenever weather alerts are issued. The department said weather warnings and advisories will continue to be shared through social media platforms and SMS alerts.
He said weather activity involving thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall is expected to continue across Bihar until the monsoon becomes fully active in the state.
