Patna: The possibility of Nishant Kumar entering public life has resurfaced after an unexpected message appeared during Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s visit to his ancestral village of Kalyan Bigha in Nalanda district on Sunday.
Nitish, who recently took oath as chief minister for the tenth time, travelled to the village to pay tribute on the 48th death anniversary of his father, Kaviraj Ram Lakhan Singh. At the memorial garden, he offered flowers, observed silence and met villagers alongside family members.
But it was not the solemn ceremony that drew the most attention. At the main entrance to the village, a large ceremonial arch declared in bold letters: “Janata ki Awaaz, Bhai Nishant” — “The people’s voice, brother Nishant”. The phrasing immediately triggered speculation: was this an early endorsement of Nishant as a political heir?
‘Nishant should enter politics now’: Satish Kumar
Speaking to reporters, Nitish Kumar’s elder brother Satish Kumar openly embraced the idea.
“Nishant can enter politics whenever he wishes. There will be no objection from the family,” he said.
“He does not need any special preparation. Whether he becomes a minister or an MLA is secondary — he should be active in politics. We want him to take the step soon.”
Satish added that he planned to speak directly to the chief minister:
“I will request my brother to consider bringing Nishant into active politics. The decision, in the end, rests with Nishant himself.”
A quiet son suddenly in the spotlight
Nishant, who has long stayed away from public life despite being the son of one of India’s longest-serving chief ministers, has rarely indicated interest in entering politics.
His name, however, frequently surfaces in political circles — sometimes due to viral videos, such as one earlier this year in which he was filmed touching the feet of a district magistrate.
Sunday’s message on the welcome gate has revived the speculation: is the ground being prepared for a generational shift, or is it merely the enthusiasm of supporters?
Family gathers for remembrance
The tribute event was attended by Satish Kumar, Nishant and other family members, along with residents of Kalyan Bigha who have seen Nitish’s political journey from its earliest years. The chief minister spent several minutes at the Smriti Vatika, reflecting quietly before leaving the village.
