Patna: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has resigned from his membership of the state legislative council, a move that has triggered fresh speculation about a possible shift in the state’s political leadership.
The resignation, which has been accepted by the council chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh, comes shortly after Nitish’s election to the Rajya Sabha and is being seen as a significant political development.
In his brief resignation letter, Nitish stated that he was stepping down from his seat in the house with effect from March 30, 2026. The letter was submitted through party representatives and accepted soon after, with the council secretariat issuing a formal notification declaring the seat vacant under constitutional provisions.
Officials said the resignation was processed under Article 190(3)(b) of the Constitution, which governs the vacating of seats in state legislatures.

Singh said he had met Nitish earlier in the day and accepted the resignation, adding that the development marked an important moment in Bihar’s political trajectory.
Nitish’s exit from the legislative council has intensified discussions over his future as chief minister, although no official announcement has been made regarding any change in leadership.
Political observers say the move could pave the way for a transition, with speculation growing over whether the Bharatiya Janata Party may project a new face for the chief minister’s post.
Nitish, one of Bihar’s longest-serving leaders, has been at the centre of the state’s politics for nearly two decades, and any shift in leadership would mark a significant change in the state’s political landscape.
For now, officials have not confirmed any timeline for further developments, even as discussions continue within ruling alliance circles.
