Patna: Political activity intensified in Bihar on Tuesday as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar prepared to resign ahead of a likely transition in the state’s leadership, with the ruling NDA expected to finalise his successor later in the day.
According to officials, Kumar is scheduled to tender his resignation at the Raj Bhavan at 3pm to the Governor Syed Ata Hasnain, bringing an end to a 145-day tenure that began on November 20,2025.
Earlier in the day, senior leaders including Sanjay Jha, Lalan Singh and Vijay Kumar Chaudhary visited the chief minister’s residence at 1 Aney Marg for a series of closed-door meetings. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also arrived at the residence later in the morning.
In a notable moment amid the day’s political churn, Kumar and Choudhary later left the residence in the same vehicle, with Vijay Kumar Chaudhary seated in the front passenger seat and the chief minister and deputy chief minister in the back.
A final cabinet meeting is scheduled for 11am, described by officials as the concluding formal session of the current government. Following this, constituent parties of the NDA—including the JD(U), BJP, HAM, RLJP and RLM—are expected to hold separate legislative meetings.
The JD(U) legislature party will meet at 2pm at 1 Aney Marg to elect its leader.
At 4pm, a joint meeting of the NDA legislature parties is expected to determine the next chief ministerial candidate, under the supervision of BJP observer Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
If confirmed, the new chief minister is expected to be sworn in at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday at 11am, marking the completion of the government formation process in Bihar.
