Patna: A municipal dumping ground along the Patna–Bakhitayarpur four-lane road has become a major safety hazard, with garbage spilling onto the carriageway and stray animals creating risks for motorists.
Residents say the stench and filth have forced many to avoid the route altogether, while frequent burning of the rubbish worsens local air pollution. Despite the installation of a waste processing unit (WPU) worth several crores, the machinery has remained idle for years and plans to convert waste into compost have stalled.
Aniruddh Kumar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA for Bakhitayarpur, has repeatedly called for the relocation of the site at least two kilometres away from the road. He argues that the presence of the dump not only endangers travellers but also highlights the failure of municipal waste management.
The municipality’s executive officer has said an alternative location is being considered and promised to introduce separate systems for dry and wet waste disposal. However, locals remain sceptical after years of inaction.
