Patna: The ancient spiritual landscape of Bihar is set to gain another major religious landmark as construction progresses on a large Jain pilgrimage and cultural complex in the Kamaladah Ji area of Patna.
The site, revered by the Jain Shvetambar community, is associated with the spiritual penance of Acharya Sthulibhadra Swami and the legacy of Shreshthi Sudarshan Swami.
Once completed, the complex is expected to emerge as a major centre for religious tourism, attracting devotees from India and abroad.
A Site Rooted In Jain Spiritual History
The project is being developed under the name:
Shri Sthulibhadra Shreshthi Sudarshan Jain Shvetambar Mani Lakshmi Tirth.
Spread across approximately 100,000 square feet, the temple complex is being constructed primarily from white marble and will feature intricate carvings and large-scale religious architecture.
The restoration and development work is being overseen by Dinesh Bhai Shah.
According to organisers, the architecture is intended to create a spiritually immersive atmosphere for pilgrims and visitors.
108-Foot Statue Of Mahavir Planned
The centrepiece of the complex will be a 72-foot statue of Mahavir Swami.
The height has been chosen to symbolically reflect the 72 years traditionally associated with Mahavir’s lifespan.
The statue will stand atop a 36-foot lotus pedestal, taking the total height to 108 feet — a number carrying spiritual significance in Indian religious traditions.
Developers believe the structure could become one of Bihar’s most prominent religious landmarks.
More Than A Temple Complex
Officials said the site was being designed not only as a place of worship but also as a broader spiritual and cultural centre.
Planned facilities include:
- a fully equipped dharmashala for visiting pilgrims
- dining halls
- residential quarters for Jain monks and nuns
- meditation and spiritual practice spaces
- landscaped green areas and a lotus pond
A dedicated art gallery will also showcase exhibits related to Jain history, Tirthankaras, Acharya Sthulibhadra Swami and Shreshthi Sudarshan.
The Legacy Of Sthulibhadra Swami
Acharya Sthulibhadra Swami is regarded as one of the most important scholars and ascetics within the Shvetambara Jain tradition.
Historical accounts place his birth around 297 BCE in the Magadha region.
His father, Shaktal, is believed to have served as a minister in the court of King Dhanananda.
Jain traditions describe Sthulibhadra as exceptionally gifted in his youth before renouncing worldly life in pursuit of spiritual discipline and self-realisation.
One of the most widely recounted legends associated with him describes how he remained steadfast in ascetic practice despite attempts by the courtesan Rupakosha to draw him back into worldly pleasures during the monsoon retreat period.
According to Jain narratives, his spiritual resolve eventually inspired Rupakosha herself to adopt Jain religious vows.
Legend Of Shreshthi Sudarshan
The site is also closely associated with the story of Shreshthi Sudarshan, whose life occupies a revered place in Jain teachings on truth and moral character.
According to tradition, when he was sentenced to death by impalement, he meditated upon the Navkar Mahamantra, after which the execution stake transformed miraculously into a throne.
For many devotees, the story remains a symbol of unwavering faith and spiritual power.
Historic Site Already Recognised By State Authorities
The 5.04-acre site has long been managed by the Patna Group of Jain Shvetambara Temples Committee.
Officials said the location is also documented in the records of Bihar’s Department of Art and Culture and the Department of Archaeology.
