Patna: Patna, the capital of Bihar, continues to attract visitors with its rich historical legacy that stretches back more than 2,500 years. Known as Pataliputra during ancient times, the city served as the capital of the Maurya and Gupta empires and remains one of India’s most significant centres of history, culture and heritage.

Patna, the capital city of Bihar.

Today, Patna combines its ancient past with modern urban development, offering travellers an opportunity to explore centuries-old monuments, world-class museums, religious landmarks and traditional neighbourhoods in a single visit.

Historic Landmarks Reflect Patna’s Glorious Past

Several iconic sites define Patna’s heritage, including Golghar, Takht Sri Harimandir Sahib, Bihar Museum, Patna Museum and Agam Kuan.

Golghar, built during the British era, remains one of the city’s most recognisable architectural landmarks. Takht Sri Harimandir Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, is among Sikhism’s holiest shrines and welcomes devotees from across India and abroad.

Bihar Museum and Patna Museum preserve thousands of artefacts that document the region’s rich archaeological and cultural history, while Agam Kuan is believed to date back to the Mauryan period.

Heritage Walks Offer a Deeper Cultural Experience

Visitors looking to understand Patna beyond its monuments can participate in guided heritage walks organised across the old city.

These walks take tourists through historic streets, temples and colonial-era structures while local guides narrate lesser-known stories associated with the city’s evolution, providing a more immersive understanding of Patna’s cultural identity.

Local Cuisine Adds Flavour to the Journey

A heritage tour of Patna is incomplete without sampling Bihar’s traditional cuisine.

Khajha, Chandrakala, Malpua, Litti-Chhokha

Popular local dishes include Litti Chokha, Khaja, Chandrakala, Malpua and a variety of delicacies prepared using Sattu. Visitors can also explore the bustling markets around Ashok Rajpath and Old Patna, where traditional handicrafts and local products showcase Bihar’s vibrant culture.

A City Where History Meets Modern Development

Despite its rapid urban expansion, Patna continues to preserve the landmarks and traditions that define its historical character.

Its ancient monuments, museums, religious sites and cultural experiences make the city an attractive destination for history enthusiasts, pilgrims and weekend travellers alike.

For anyone seeking to explore Bihar’s rich past while enjoying authentic local culture, Patna offers a heritage experience that combines history, architecture, cuisine and tradition in one destination.
