Patna: Patna’s first metro service has taken the city by storm, clocking 68,554 passengers in just 18 days since its inauguration. The metro, which connects Bairia Bus Stand to Bhootnath over a 4.3-kilometre route, is fast becoming the capital’s newest attraction — not just for commuters but also for selfie-takers and families looking to experience Bihar’s modern transit system.
The busiest day so far was October 12, when 10,778 passengers boarded the metro, while the lowest ridership was seen on Diwali (October 20) with just 1,375 passengers. On average, 285 people travel in a single trip, mostly during morning and evening rush hours.
Cultural design meets modern tech
Adding a unique local flavour, each of the three metro coaches is adorned with Madhubani paintings and images of Bihar’s iconic landmarks such as Golghar, Mahavir Temple, Bodh Gaya’s Mahabodhi Tree, and the ruins of Nalanda. The orange-painted interiors are designed to reflect Bihar’s rich artistic heritage while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.
Each coach is fitted with 360-degree CCTV cameras, two emergency buttons, and a microphone system linking directly to the driver and control room. The metro can accommodate 138 seated and 945 standing passengers, with a maximum speed of 40 km/h.
Security and safety measures
Security has been ramped up with a double-layer screening system similar to the Delhi Metro. Armed personnel are deployed even at gate areas to ensure smooth and safe operations. The fare for the short route from New ISBT to Bhootnath is just Rs. 15, making it both affordable and accessible.
The city’s new weekend craze
Beyond transport, the Patna Metro has quickly become a weekend hotspot. Families are seen making short rides, capturing photos, and sharing reels across social media platforms, celebrating what many view as a milestone in the city’s urban transformation.
