Patna: Police have arrested a man accused of misleading a nursing student by concealing his identity and marital status, establishing a relationship under false pretences and later attempting to blackmail her with threats of circulating intimate videos.
According to investigators, the accused, identified as Mohammad Rustam, a resident of Sahebganj in Muzaffarpur district, first contacted the woman earlier this year from an unknown number, introducing himself as “Sonu”. What began as a casual phone conversation reportedly developed into a relationship, during which he promised marriage.
Police said the man later persuaded the student to meet him in Patna, where he allegedly took her to a hotel and recorded private videos without her informed consent. Further inquiries revealed that the man was already married and the father of three children. After the woman attempted to cut off contact, police said the accused repeatedly called her from different numbers and threatened to make the videos public. He also allegedly tried to coerce her into travelling with him outside the state.
Distressed by the threats, the student approached the Jakkanpur police station, where a case was registered under relevant criminal provisions, including sexual exploitation and intimidation. Officers then laid a trap and arrested the accused when he arrived in Patna to meet the complainant near the Mithapur old bus stand.
During questioning, police said the man admitted that the initial contact had occurred after he mistakenly dialled the wrong number. Officials confirmed that he had been working at a shop in Kolkata and that his marriage dated back to 2012.
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
