Patna: The Patna district administration has suspended classes up to Grade 5 in all government and private schools until June 20, citing severe heat and rising temperatures that officials say pose a risk to children’s health.
The order was issued on June 14 by District Magistrate Dr Thiyagarajan S.M. and comes amid continuing heatwave-like conditions across Patna and several other parts of Bihar.
Under the directive, classes for students in class 6 to 8 may continue, but only until 10.30am. No teaching activities will be permitted beyond that time.
Precautionary Measure Amid Rising Temperatures
The district administration said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect children from the effects of extreme heat and humidity.
According to the order, prolonged exposure to high temperatures could adversely affect the health and well-being of students, particularly younger children.
Officials have directed all government and private educational institutions in the district to comply strictly with the revised schedule.

Heat Continues To Grip Bihar
Patna and several other districts in Bihar have experienced persistently high temperatures in recent days, accompanied by oppressive humidity that has disrupted daily life.
The India Meteorological Department has indicated that there is unlikely to be any immediate relief from the prevailing weather conditions, prompting authorities to take preventive action.
The district administration said the restrictions on school operations would remain in effect until June 20, after which the situation will be reviewed.
Schools Asked To Revise Schedules
The order is expected to affect a large number of schools across the district.
While summer vacations are still continuing in some private institutions, many schools had already resumed classes after the holiday break. School managements will now be required to revise their schedules in accordance with the administration’s instructions.
Authorities have warned that all educational institutions must ensure strict adherence to the order.
Advisory For Parents
The district administration has also appealed to parents to take precautions during the ongoing heatwave.
Parents have been advised to avoid sending children outdoors unnecessarily during the hottest parts of the day and to ensure they remain adequately hydrated.
Officials said the measures are intended to minimise health risks until weather conditions improve and temperatures begin to moderate.
