Patna: Patna is all set to witness the launch of its first metro service, the Red Line, starting August 15. However, the minimum fare for commuters will be higher than that of the Delhi Metro, officials from the Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) have confirmed.
The PMRC has fixed the minimum fare for distances up to 3 km at ₹15, while Delhi Metro currently charges ₹10 for the same range. For commuters traveling between 3 to 6 km — the approximate length of the first operational stretch — the fare will be ₹30. The inaugural route runs 6.63 km from Malahi Pakadi in Kankarbagh to Patliputra Bus Terminal.
Electricity Costs Could Influence Future Fares
Metro officials cautioned that the fare structure is contingent upon electricity being provided at a low cost. Currently, the South Bihar Power Distribution Company has been requested to supply electricity on a no-profit-no-loss basis to keep operational costs and fares in check.
A public hearing on this matter was recently held by the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission, where metro officials urged for concessional electricity rates to ensure affordability for the public. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for July 15.
Service Hours and Commuter Benefits
The Red Line Metro will operate daily from 5 am to 11 pm. Officials highlighted that the metro service cannot be directly compared to the Indian Railways, which operates round the clock and runs both passenger and goods trains.
“The metro will offer a fast, safe, and comfortable commuting experience,” said a PMRC official. “People will no longer have to deal with traffic congestion and can reach their destinations on time.”
