Patna: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has appointed senior advocate Anshul Raj as a judge of the Patna high court, according to a notification issued by the ministry of law and justice. The appointment adds to the court’s existing judicial strength.
Raj, will assume office on the day he takes the oath. With his induction, the number of judges in the high court will rise to 38. The court has a sanctioned strength of 53 judges, leaving 15 posts vacant.
He enrolled as an advocate at the Patna high court and practised there for several years. During his early career, he worked as an assistant advocate with Arvind Ujjwal, the Bihar government’s standing counsel, and was later appointed as a law officer by the state government.
Raj has represented the Bihar government in various matters before the court and was designated a senior advocate last year. His name was recommended for elevation to the bench in February the same year.
His father, Yogesh Chandra Verma, is a senior advocate at the Patna high court and has served several terms as president of the Patna high court Advocates’ Association. He is also a member of the Bihar State Bar Council. Raj is expected to take the oath shortly, though the date has not yet been announced.
