Patna: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started a safety drive in Bihar to reduce road accidents caused by dense fog during the winter season. Every year, thick fog covers several national highway stretches in the state, making it difficult for drivers to see clearly. Poor visibility has often led to vehicles hitting dividers or crashing into other vehicles, raising serious safety concerns for commuters.
To address this problem, NHAI is installing retro-reflective tape on road dividers, important highway stretches and heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses. This special tape reflects light from vehicle headlights and can be seen from a long distance, even in foggy conditions. Officials said recent accidents showed that drivers were unable to spot dividers and slow-moving vehicles in time, which made such safety measures necessary.
The installation work is mainly focused on national highway sections that experience heavy fog every winter, along with toll plaza areas where traffic movement is high. The campaign is being carried out in coordination with project implementation units, toll plaza operators and the local administration. NHAI believes that improving visibility through simple steps can greatly reduce the chances of accidents on busy highways.
N.L. Yewatkar, Regional Officer of NHAI in Bihar, said that low visibility during fog is one of the main causes of winter road accidents. He added that simple and effective measures like reflective tape can significantly improve road safety. NHAI has also appealed to highway users to follow speed limits, use fog lights properly and strictly obey traffic rules to ensure safe and smooth travel.
