Patna/Darbhanga: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Sanjay Sarawagi as the new president of its Bihar unit, with the party’s central leadership handing him charge of the organisation in the state.
Sarawagi, a legislator from the Darbhanga Urban assembly constituency, has been associated with the BJP and its affiliated organisations since his student years. Party officials said the appointment reflects his long organisational experience and electoral record.
Born on 28 August 1969, Sarawagi began his political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the BJP’s student wing. He formally joined the BJP in 1995 and later took on responsibilities within the party’s youth wing, gradually rising through its ranks. Sarawagi first entered electoral politics by contesting and winning a municipal election from ward number six of the Darbhanga Municipal Corporation. His success at the local level paved the way for a larger role within the party.
In March 2005, the BJP fielded him from the Darbhanga Urban seat in the Bihar assembly elections, which he won on his first attempt. He has retained the seat in successive elections held in 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025.
In the most recent assembly polls, Sarawagi secured a decisive victory over Vikassheel Insaan Party leader Umesh Sahni, reinforcing his standing within the party.
Party leaders said Sarawagi’s appointment comes at a crucial time as the BJP seeks to strengthen its organisational base in Bihar and prepare for upcoming political contests.
