Patna: The Bihar government has accelerated efforts to revive the Sasamusa sugar mill in Gopalganj district, with senior officials reviewing administrative, technical and financial hurdles that have delayed its reopening.
Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit chaired a video conference on Thursday to assess progress and instructed departments to resolve pending matters on priority. He directed officials to complete procedural formalities within a stipulated timeframe and ensure closer coordination between agencies.
Vishal Nirani, managing director of Nirani Sugars Limited, participated in the meeting and expressed interest in the mill’s revival, signalling potential private sector involvement in the project.
Officials from the sugarcane industry and energy departments presented updates on steps taken so far. Following the review, Amrit directed both departments to jointly prepare a time-bound action plan and remove obstacles impeding the project.
The chief secretary said restarting the mill would have a direct impact on thousands of sugarcane farmers in the region, who currently rely on distant mills to sell their produce. Local processing, he said, would reduce transportation costs and help streamline payments to farmers.
The Sasamusa mill, once a key economic driver in Gopalganj, has remained closed for years. Its revival is being positioned as part of the state’s broader push to strengthen agro-based industries and rural employment.
Officials said further meetings would be held to monitor progress and ensure deadlines are met.
