Patna: The audacious murder of notorious Buxar criminal Chandan Mishra inside a ward of Paras HMRI Hospital in Patna on Thursday has sent shockwaves across the city. The precise execution of the crime by five assailants suggests a meticulously planned operation.
Initial investigations by Patna Police, aided by CCTV footage, have led to the identification of one shooter, Tausif, a resident of Phulwarisharif. Police strongly suspect that Omkarnath alias Sheru, a notorious criminal from Buxar who was once Mishra’s close associate but later became his bitter rival, orchestrated the killing. Sheru is currently incarcerated in Purulia jail in West Bengal, leading investigators to believe the murder plot was hatched from behind bars.
Deep-Seated Rivalry and Suspicions
The primary motive behind Chandan Mishra’s murder appears to be a fierce gang rivalry, fueled by Sheru’s suspicion that Mishra was acting as a police informant against him. This suspicion reportedly deepened due to four key factors:
- Social Media Activity: Chandan Mishra was consistently posting various reels on Facebook, which the Sheru gang allegedly viewed as him living a lavish life in jail with the connivance of the administration, thereby making him a target.
- Hospital Stay After Discharge: After undergoing an operation on Wednesday, Chandan Mishra was discharged by doctors but chose to remain in the hospital. This prolonged stay was perceived by the Sheru gang as further evidence of his comfortable existence due to administrative connivance.
- Elimination of Gang Members: At one point, Chandan and Sheru jointly operated their gang, engaging in major crimes ranging from murder to gold robbery. However, after their enmity began, members of Sheru’s gang reportedly started being killed one by one. Sheru grew suspicious that Chandan was spying for the police, providing details about gang members and leading to their demise.
- Bhagalpur Jail Dispute: There was also a reported dispute between Chandan and Sheru during their time in Bhagalpur jail, further escalating their animosity.
Police sources indicate that the murder was a direct consequence of this intense fight for supremacy between the former allies.
Victim’s Criminal Past and Police Warnings
Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar confirmed that Chandan Mishra was a “notorious criminal” with “dozens of murders” to his name. “Based on the special input that the police had, Chandan was already warned to be cautious for security reasons. He was killed even after the police advised him to be alert,” the DGP stated.
Mishra was convicted in a murder case and had initially been sentenced to death, which was later commuted to life imprisonment upon appeal. He had been serving his sentence and was out on parole at the time of his death. The DGP also mentioned Mishra’s involvement in the land business, a common area for criminal activities.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on apprehending the remaining shooters and fully unraveling the conspiracy behind this high-profile hospital killing.
