Patna: The state government has started fresh efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion, especially in cities. Transport Secretary Raj Kumar held a video conference meeting with District Transport Officers and other officials from all districts to review ongoing schemes and services. During the meeting, he clearly said that road safety is not only about issuing fines or strict enforcement. Real improvement, he explained, can happen only when roads are designed safely, drivers are well trained, and people are aware of traffic rules.
To improve road safety on the ground, the Transport Secretary asked all districts to prepare and submit lists of places where foot overbridges, zebra crossings and traffic signals are needed. He said special attention should be given to accident-prone areas, where such facilities can help prevent serious accidents. Once these locations are identified, the department will plan and take necessary action so that pedestrians and drivers can move more safely on busy roads.
The Transport Department is also focusing on improving the behaviour and skills of government vehicle drivers. Raj Kumar instructed all districts to submit updated details of all government drivers, including those working on contract. These drivers will be given special road safety training at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR). The aim is to ensure that government vehicles follow traffic rules properly and that drivers set a good example for others on the road.
Public awareness has been described as a key part of reducing road accidents. The Transport Secretary directed districts to organise road safety awareness programmes regularly and to publicise them widely. He said citizens, students, drivers and young people must clearly understand traffic rules and the dangers of careless driving. According to him, when people are aware and responsible, accidents can be reduced significantly.
Raj Kumar expressed hope that all districts will follow the instructions seriously and submit the required information on time. He said that safe roads, trained drivers and aware citizens together can make a big difference. Senior officials, including State Transport Commissioner Arif Ahsan and other department officers, were also present during the meeting, showing the government’s strong focus on making roads safer for everyone.
