Patna: Bihar is planning a 336-km greenfield expressway connecting Buxar with Bhagalpur, creating a new road corridor across 13 districts in the southern and eastern parts of the state.
The proposed route will pass through Buxar, Bhojpur, Arwal, Jehanabad, Gaya, Nalanda, Nawada, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Munger, Jamui, Banka and Bhagalpur before reaching the outskirts of Bhagalpur. The corridor is expected to improve road connectivity between these districts and provide faster access to existing highways and major road networks.
Why Patna Has A Different Link
Patna is not included in the direct alignment of the proposed greenfield expressway.
Instead, Jehanabad will serve as the key connecting point for Patna. The capital is already connected to Jehanabad through a four-lane national highway.
Travellers from Patna can use this existing road to reach Jehanabad and then access the proposed expressway towards Gaya and other districts along the route.
This arrangement would allow Patna to connect with the new corridor without the greenfield expressway passing directly through the capital.
From Buxar To Bhagalpur
The expressway will start from Buxar and pass through Bhojpur and Arwal before reaching Jehanabad.
From there, the proposed alignment will continue towards Gaya and Nalanda, followed by Nawada, Sheikhpura and Lakhisarai.
The route will then move through Munger, Jamui and Banka before reaching the outskirts of Bhagalpur.
As a greenfield expressway, the project is planned largely along a new alignment rather than simply widening an existing highway.
Proposed Link With Uttar Pradesh
The Buxar-Bhagalpur expressway is also proposed to connect with the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh.
If developed as planned, the link could strengthen road connectivity between Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh and provide access to a wider network of expressways.
For travellers from Bihar, this could improve road connections towards destinations in Uttar Pradesh and farther west.
Potential Benefits For The Districts
The proposed corridor could make travel between several districts in southern and eastern Bihar more efficient.
At present, many journeys between these areas depend on existing highways and state roads. A new high-speed corridor could provide an alternative route and potentially reduce travel times.
The project could also improve connectivity to markets, transport hubs and other major road networks.
A Boost For Goods Movement
The proposed expressway is expected to have implications beyond passenger travel.
Improved road connectivity could make the movement of goods between districts faster and more efficient. This could support logistics and commercial activity along the corridor.

Under the proposed arrangement, private investment would be involved in the project, while vehicles using the expressway would pay toll charges.
