Patna: The first day of the Advanced Techniques in Coronary Bifurcation Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Workshop at AIIMS Patna concluded with a live image-guided angioplasty, scientific discussions and participation from cardiologists, trainees and healthcare professionals from across the region.
The scientific programme began with a live transmission of an image-guided PCI from the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at AIIMS Patna. The procedure was performed by Dr Kenichiro Shimoji, Chief of the Cardiology Division at Saiseikai Utsunomiya Hospital, Japan, and Dr Anupam Bhambhani, Head of the Department of Cardiology at AIIMS Patna.
Live Procedure Highlights Imaging Techniques
During the live case, the faculty demonstrated the use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) to plan, optimise and assess coronary stent implantation. According to the organisers, intracoronary imaging helps improve precision during PCI procedures and supports better procedural outcomes.
The live demonstration was followed by an interactive discussion featuring interventional cardiologists Dr Shamshaad, Dr Ashish Jha and Dr Vipin Kumar, who discussed current approaches to managing complex coronary bifurcation lesions. Cardiovascular surgeons Dr Sanjeev Kumar and Dr Pragati Kapoor chaired the scientific sessions.
Workshop Inauguration
The workshop was inaugurated by Brig Dr Raju Agarwal, Executive Director of AIIMS Patna, in the presence of chief guest Dr Bhanu Duggal, Professor of Cardiology and Vice-Chancellor of Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University. The event was also attended by Dr Kenichiro Shimoji, the Medical Superintendent, deans, faculty members, CSI State President Dr Sanjeev Kumar and Dr Anupam Bhambhani, who is also the National Course Director.
Welcoming participants, Dr Bhambhani highlighted the importance of adopting emerging technologies, learning from international experts and strengthening global academic collaboration. He also underlined the growing role of simulation-based training and artificial intelligence in preparing cardiologists for complex interventional procedures.
Focus on Precision and Ethics
Addressing the gathering, Brig Dr Agarwal emphasised the need for precision in cardiovascular interventions and encouraged young cardiologists to develop expertise in advanced techniques to deliver safe and evidence-based patient care.
In her inaugural address, Dr Duggal urged early-career cardiologists to maintain high ethical standards while continuously improving their technical skills. She also acknowledged the Department of Cardiology at AIIMS Patna for its contribution to teaching and structured training of DM Cardiology residents.
Second Day to Feature Hands-On Training
Organisers said the second day of the workshop will focus on contemporary coronary bifurcation PCI techniques through expert lectures and hands-on simulation sessions. Participants will practise different bifurcation stenting strategies using advanced simulators designed to replicate real-life clinical scenarios.
