Patna: Independent MP Pappu Yadav has landed in controversy following his remarks about women in politics, drawing strong reactions from political leaders and the Bihar State Women’s Commission.
Taking serious note of the statement, the Commission has issued a notice seeking an explanation from the MP. It has also warned that failure to provide a satisfactory response may lead to a recommendation for revoking his membership from the Lok Sabha.
Commission Chairperson Apsara Mishra condemned the remarks, stating that any comment undermining the dignity of women is unacceptable. She also pointed out that such statements are even more concerning given that a woman public representative is part of Yadav’s own family.
What sparked the controversy?
The row began after Yadav, during a Facebook Live session on Tuesday, claimed that women often face exploitation to enter politics. The controversy escalated when he alleged that women in politics “move forward by sharing a bed with one leader or another.”
The statement quickly triggered backlash from political circles and social organisations, with many terming it derogatory and offensive.
Commission’s notice and warning
In its notice, the Commission stated that such remarks not only hurt women’s dignity but also damage their image in society. It has asked Yadav to clarify why action should not be recommended against him, including the possibility of disqualification.
Yadav refuses to back down
Amid the growing controversy, Yadav has refused to retract his statement. Reacting strongly, he dismissed the Commission’s notice, saying it should be “thrown into the dustbin,” further intensifying the issue.
Anant Singh’s sharp reaction
Meanwhile, JD(U) MLA from Mokama, Anant Singh, launched a scathing attack on Yadav. He said that before making such statements, Yadav should introspect, adding that such comments are disrespectful towards women and cannot be justified.
