Patna: Preparations are under way for the first session of Bihar’s newly constituted 18th Vidhan Sabha, with proceedings expected to begin on 1 December. The Parliamentary Affairs Department has initiated arrangements for what will be the new government’s maiden legislative sitting.
The decision was endorsed during the first cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday, where six proposals were approved. However, senior officials did not formally confirm the session dates during a media briefing.
Oath ceremony on Day One
The opening day will see all 243 newly elected MLAs take oath. The task will be led by Narendra Narayan Yadav, appointed as the Protem Speaker by Governor Arif Mohammed Khan. Following the swearing-in, the House will proceed to elect its new Speaker.
According to departmental officials, the session will comprise five sittings, with administrative and technical preparations already in progress.
Narendra Narayan Yadav: Eight-term MLA and veteran of JP movement
Narendra Narayan Yadav, a senior JDU leader, has been appointed the Protem Speaker for the first session. He took oath of office in Patna on Monday.
A veteran of the Jayaprakash Narayan movement, Yadav first won the Alamnagar seat in 1995 and has been re-elected eight consecutive times. He has earlier served both as a minister in the state government and as Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.
Cabinet clears youth-focused agenda
During the cabinet meeting, the government approved major proposals centred on youth employment. In a statement shared on X, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that providing jobs and opportunities to young people has been a long-standing priority.
He highlighted that under Saat Nishchay-2, the state provided 50 lakh jobs and employment opportunities between 2020 and 2025, and has now set a target of 1 crore employment opportunities for the next five years (2025–30).
