Patna: Officials in Bihar have called for an acceleration of work on the Bakhtiyarpur-Tajpur bridge over the Ganga, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between North and South Bihar.
During a site review on Monday, Pankaj Kumar Pal, Secretary of the Road Construction Department, assessed the progress of the project and instructed engineers to intensify work on remaining sections. According to the department, most of the bridge’s foundation and substructure work has been completed, with only one pier still under construction.
The four-lane greenfield bridge, being built by the Bihar State Road Development Corporation, will link National Highway 31 near Karjan (Bakhtiyarpur) in Patna to National Highway 122 at Tajpur in Samastipur district. The project spans 51.26 kilometres, including a 5.51-kilometre crossing over the Ganga and 45.75 kilometres of approach roads.
Officials reported that of the 1,170 segments cast for the bridge, 650 have been completed, while 197 of the planned 1,043 segments have been erected using a launching gantry. Work with cranes on 127 segments has already been completed, and 118 of 471 CFT segments have been cast.
“The project is progressing on schedule, but I have directed officials to deploy additional resources to speed up casting, erection, and other critical activities,” Pal said. “Work must be completed within the stipulated timeframe while ensuring quality and safety.”
Once finished, the bridge is expected to reduce the traffic load on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu and significantly cut travel time between key districts in Bihar.
