Bihta: In Bihta, Bihar, a shelter home run by the Social Welfare Department is changing the lives of orphaned and helpless children. Earlier located in Gayghat, Patna, the home has now moved to a modern facility that can accommodate 200 children, with separate hostels, training centres, staff quarters, and administrative buildings for 100 boys and 100 girls. The project, built at a cost of around 28.21 crore rupees, provides a safe and supportive environment where children can grow, learn, and develop skills for a brighter future.
The children at the shelter are not only getting regular education but also learning various skills that help them become self-reliant. Programs include computer classes, dance, arts and crafts, sewing, and beauty training. Every day begins with yoga, followed by studies, sports, cultural activities, and community meals, creating a family-like atmosphere. These activities help the children gain confidence, enjoy their childhood, and prepare for life beyond the shelter.
Safety and convenience are a priority at the home. The premises have CCTV cameras, a 15-foot-high perimeter wall, and male and female security personnel. Doctors and medical facilities, including OPD and emergency services, are also available. The home has a mess, a library, and a playground, ensuring that the children have access to all the facilities they need for learning, playing, and staying healthy.
Superintendents Renu Kumari and Harshvardhan Hemant, along with Vivek Ranjan Jha, manage the shelter with care and dedication. Superintendent Kumari says that all the children are like her own family and that their smiles give her the greatest happiness. Today, this shelter home is more than just a place to live and study — it has become a place where children can dream, learn, and grow into confident, independent individuals. It is a shining example of how proper guidance and support can change the lives of children who need it the most.
