Patna: The Bihar cabinet has approved the development of a logistics park and cargo hub near Darbhanga Airport, a move aimed at strengthening agri-cargo, logistics and employment opportunities in the Mithila region and north Bihar.
Announcing the decision, Nilesh Ramchandra Deore, secretary of the civil aviation department, said administrative approval had been granted for the acquisition of 50 acres of land at an estimated cost of Rs 138.82 crore. He said the project was expected to provide a significant boost to regional trade and overall economic growth.
Deore also said Darbhanga airport would get a domestic air cargo terminal, with capital expenditure provisions initiated under AAI Cargo Logistics. “This will strengthen air cargo infrastructure, support regional trade, and boost economic activity in north Bihar,” he said in a post on X.

Darbhanga airport began commercial operations after its inauguration on November 8, 2020, under the RCS-UDAN, marking a major expansion of air connectivity in Bihar.
In October 2024, Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a new civil enclave at the airport remotely from Varanasi. The existing terminal, which currently handles around 1,500 passengers a day, is expected to see footfall rise to about 8,000 once the expansion is completed.
As part of the planned upgrade, the terminal area will expand from about 1,400 sq metres to 51,800 sq metres, while the runway length is proposed to be increased from 9,000 feet to 12,000 feet to accommodate larger aircraft.
At present, the airport is served by SpiceJet, IndiGo and Akasa Air, with direct flights connecting Darbhanga to major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Officials said the planned logistics and cargo infrastructure would complement passenger growth and position the airport as a key economic gateway for the region.
