Patna: A deep, 150-foot-long crack has appeared in the earth in Korhar village, located in the Bihta block near Patna, Bihar, following days of heavy rainfall. The incident has caused widespread alarm among the local population, who now fear for their safety and livelihoods.
The fissure, stretching between 150 to 200 feet through farmland, was discovered after persistent rains pounded the region. Villagers quickly alerted the local administration, prompting a response from the office of the District Magistrate of Patna. Following instructions from Bihta Zonal Officer Rakesh Kumar Singh, local official Manish Kumar was dispatched to inspect the site. An investigation is currently underway.
“There is a deep sense of fear among residents. People are afraid to go to their fields,” a local told reporters. The village, with a population between 1,200 and 1,500, sits just 100 metres from an Air Force boundary wall. Locals expressed concern that the proximity to the planned expansion of the Bihta airport runway could be linked to the incident.
Authorities, however, have yet to determine the cause. Manish Kumar suggested the crack may be the result of geological stress following intense heat and subsequent rainfall. The preliminary report has been submitted to the Circle Officer, and the matter is expected to be forwarded to the Disaster Management Department for further assessment.
