Patna: Political activity in Bihar is intensifying as the state gears up for the 2025 assembly elections. Parties are increasingly fielding candidates from a range of professional backgrounds, offering opportunities to individuals who have earned recognition outside traditional politics. IPS officers, doctors, engineers, and prominent artists from the Bhojpuri film industry are among those entering the electoral fray.
According to reports, leaders from both the NDA and the Grand Alliance, as well as other parties, have nominated some of these professionals, while several others are contesting as independents. Former IPS officer Anand Mishra, previously part of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, is among those trying his luck in the elections.
Several other retired IPS officers have also been given tickets. Sunil Kumar, who retired as Director General, is contesting for the second time on a JD(U) ticket. Former ADG-rank officer Jaiprakash Singh and retired DG-rank officer RK Mishra have been nominated by Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj party. Meanwhile, Shivdeep Lande, a retired IG officer, is entering the race as an independent.
Medical professionals are also well-represented. Dr Sunil Kumar will contest from Bihar Sharif on a BJP ticket, while Dr Sanjeev Kumar is running from Parbatta. Jan Suraaj has fielded 16 doctors, including former IGIMS director Dr Arun Kumar, senior pediatrician Dr Lal Babu Prasad, retired medical officer Dr Shashishekhar Sinha, and renowned physician Dr Ajit Kumar from Gayaji.
Engineers are also contesting, with Ajit Kumar running from Kanti, Hemant Paswan from Barachatti, and Abhishank Kumar from Alauli. The Bhojpuri entertainment industry is similarly well-represented, with artists such as Maithili Thakur, Ritesh Pandey, Seema Singh, Vinay Bihar, and Khesari Lal Yadav entering the political arena.
