Patna: What if your heart is trying to warn you through your feet? Medical experts are urging people not to ignore persistent leg pain, swelling, or numbness, saying these could be early indicators of cardiovascular disease or arterial blockages.
Many people think heart trouble only shows up as chest pain, but experts warn that the body often sends early distress signals. Persistent leg cramps, ankle swelling, or cold feet may hint at poor blood flow from blocked arteries. Similarly, pain in the jaw, shoulder, arm, or upper back, along with shortness of breath, dizziness, or unexplained fatigue, can all be red flags of an impending cardiac issue. Cardiologists advise that such signs should never be ignored — the body whispers before the heart shouts.

“Swelling in the ankles or unusual pain while resting could signal reduced blood flow from the heart,” said cardiologists, explaining how the body often sends subtle signs before a major cardiac event.
At the root of this condition is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) — a circulatory disorder where arteries narrow due to plaque build-up, restricting oxygen-rich blood flow to limbs. PAD doesn’t just cause leg cramps; it’s also a strong predictor of coronary artery disease, stroke, and heart attack.
The Link Between PAD and Heart Disease
Both PAD and coronary artery disease stem from the same underlying problem: atherosclerosis, or the hardening of arteries. When left untreated, PAD significantly raises the risk of life-threatening heart complications.
“Detecting PAD early allows us to prevent major cardiac issues,” said doctors, urging routine cardiovascular check-ups, especially for those with diabetes, hypertension, or a history of smoking.
Symptoms You Should Never Ignore
Doctors highlight six major PAD-related warning signs:
- Leg cramps or pain while walking that ease with rest
- Numbness or tingling in the feet
- Wounds or sores that heal slowly
- Pale, discoloured, or cold feet even under warm conditions
- Swelling in feet or ankles without apparent cause
- Sudden changes in skin tone or appearance
When to Seek Help
If your feet remain unusually cold, swollen, or painful despite rest, cardiologists recommend immediate evaluation. “It’s your body’s alarm system,” said experts, stressing that timely treatment can prevent severe heart complication.
