Patna: At least 12 people have died after lightning strikes and severe weather conditions swept across Bihar on Monday, officials said.
The fatalities were reported from multiple districts, with five deaths in East Champaran, four in Gaya and three in Aurangabad. Authorities said most of the deaths were caused by lightning strikes during sudden storms and heavy rainfall.
Sudden Weather Shift Catches Residents Off Guard
Officials said the abrupt change in weather conditions left little time for people to seek shelter, as thunderstorms, strong winds and intense rainfall affected several parts of the state.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that adverse weather conditions may persist, with the possibility of further rain and gusty winds in the coming days.
Government Announces Compensation
Chief minister Samrat Choudhary expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced ex gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each bereaved family.
He said the government stands with those affected and has directed officials to ensure that relief measures are implemented without delay.
Districts On Alert
Authorities have placed districts on alert and instructed local administrations to expedite relief and rescue operations. Officials said efforts are under way to assist affected families and monitor vulnerable areas.

The administration has also urged residents to remain cautious, particularly during thunderstorms, and to avoid open spaces during lightning activity.
