Patna: In a major change, the Bihar government has decided that all members of the state legislature—whether from the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council—will now be called MLAs. This step aims to remove confusion among the public and give equal status to all elected lawmakers in the state.
The move follows the system used in Parliament, where all members from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are called MPs. Until now, only members of the Assembly were called MLAs, while members of the Council were known as MLCs. This difference often caused misunderstanding, especially in states where there is no Legislative Council.
Bihar Legislative Council Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh said that many people outside Bihar confused MLCs with local ward councillors. “Now, just like all Parliament members are called MPs, all our legislators will be called MLAs. This will make things simpler and clearer,” he said.
Officials said this change is part of a larger administrative and language reform. It will make it easier for people to understand the roles of their elected representatives. The change is also expected to improve how records are maintained and may be introduced in other states with similar systems.
