Patna: The monsoon is expected to become active again in Bihar within the next 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing alerts for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and lightning across several districts.
A red alert has been issued for Lakhisarai, while an orange alert has been sounded for Patna and multiple other districts. In districts such as Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia and Katihar, the sky is expected to remain generally cloudy.
Rain forecast across Bihar till June 28
According to the weather department, intermittent rainfall is likely across most parts of Bihar until June 28. North Bihar, Seemanchal and Kosi regions are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall at several locations.
South Bihar is also likely to experience light to moderate rain accompanied by strong surface winds. The IMD has also warned of lightning strikes during this period.
After the rainfall spell, temperatures may drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius within 48 hours, bringing partial relief from heat and humidity.
Rising river levels in Nepal, flood concern in Bihar
Continuous rainfall in Nepal has led to rising water levels in rivers. On Monday, around 91,000 cusecs of water were discharged from the Koshi Barrage, increasing flood risk in low-lying areas of Supaul district.
Weather conditions in the last 24 hours
Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 36.9°C. The highest temperature in the state was recorded in Buxar and Kaimur at 40.8°C.
Rainfall activity was reported in several districts including Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Gopalganj, Lakhisarai, Bettiah and Kaimur. Many other areas remained partly cloudy.
In Patna’s AG Colony, light rain was observed on Monday evening, while Lakhisarai witnessed heavy rainfall. Nalanda reported waterlogging after intense showers.
District-wise weather outlook
23 June: Heavy rain likely in Lakhisarai, Munger, Jamui, Bhagalpur and nearby areas. Light rain expected in Patna, Bhojpur and several southern districts with cloudy skies across Bihar.
24 June: Light rain with strong winds (30–40 kmph) likely in most districts.
25 June: Heavy rainfall likely in Araria, Kishanganj and Supaul; light rain expected in Patna.
26 June: Heavy rain likely in East and West Champaran. Patna and nearby regions may also witness moderate to heavy showers.
Monsoon over Bihar: Active but uneven
Meteorologists said the northern limit of the monsoon has reached Bihar, but its impact remains uneven across the state. Rainfall activity is currently scattered.
The main reasons include a seasonal trough extending from Punjab to Bihar and prevailing westerly winds at lower levels, which are blocking moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal into South Bihar.
Due to insufficient moisture, large-scale cloud formation is limited, resulting in weak and irregular rainfall across many districts. Similar slow monsoon progression has been observed across parts of the country in the past two weeks.
However, weather experts indicate signs of a revival in monsoon activity. If moisture inflow increases and atmospheric conditions become favourable, Bihar may witness stronger rainfall activity in the coming days.
When will monsoon fully activate in Bihar?
According to forecasts, monsoon activity is expected to gradually intensify between 24 and 26 June, with thunderstorms and light to moderate rain in several districts.
Between 27 and 28 June, the monsoon is likely to become more active, bringing widespread rainfall across the state.
Experts suggest that if moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal strengthens and westerly winds weaken, Bihar could see a full-scale monsoon revival, leading to regular rainfall, relief from heat and improved conditions for agriculture.
