Patna: Three young men were killed and another seriously injured in a road accident on the Bihta–Sarmera State Highway-78 near Jamalpur village in Bihar, police said.
Two riders died at the scene after a collision between two motorcycles, while a third victim later succumbed to injuries during treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Monday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Ravi Kumar, 25, son of Rampravesh Kewat from Sundarpur in Dhanarua, Shankar Ram, 35, son of Bharat Ram from Chak Surat in Shahjahanpur, and Suraj Kumar of Dallu Bigha.
According to police, Ravi Kumar was travelling by motorcycle to his in-laws’ home in Shivchak in Fatuha. At the same time, Shankar Ram was riding towards Beldarichak. Near Jamalpur village the two motorcycles collided head-on, throwing all four riders onto the road.
Witnesses said a speeding unidentified vehicle approaching from behind then ran over Ravi Kumar and Shankar Ram, who had fallen onto the road after the crash. The vehicle reportedly dragged one of the victims for nearly 200 metres before fleeing towards Beldarichak.
Both men died at the scene. Suraj Kumar, Shankar Ram’s brother-in-law, and another youth riding with Ravi Kumar were seriously injured.
Local residents rushed the injured to Masadhi hospital, from where doctors referred them to Patna for advanced treatment. Suraj Kumar later died at PMCH despite medical efforts, while the fourth victim remains under treatment.
The accident triggered anger among villagers, who gathered at the site and blocked the highway for nearly three hours. Police from Daniyawan and Shahjahanpur stations, led by Fatuha SDPO-2 Sanjeev Kumar, reached the spot with additional forces and eventually persuaded protesters to clear the road.
Sanjeev Kumar said the bodies had been sent to Patna for post-mortem examination and that efforts were under way to identify the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.
Police said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
