Patna: The troubles of Vinod Kumar, a superintendent engineer with the Rural Works Department, appear set to deepen after he reportedly burned lakhs of rupees in a single night.
Authorities from the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) are now expanding their probe to include Kumar’s home district of Samastipur as well as his place of posting. Initial interrogations of the engineer have revealed a network of alleged collusion between local engineers, contractors, and other white-collar individuals.
Two separate teams have been formed by the EOU to verify these claims, conducting interviews with potential associates in the implicated districts. Sources said Kumar initially sought to evade questioning, citing illness, but investigators are confident that his testimony could expose further hidden details regarding the recovery of large sums of cash.
Preparations are underway to take Kumar on remand, which authorities say is necessary to extract answers to critical questions. At present, he remains in judicial custody.
The Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate have also been alerted due to Kumar’s extensive movable and immovable assets. Officials are reviewing his PAN card, banking documents, and material seized during raids on his residence. The information will be used to scrutinise his income tax filings and identify potential tax evasion linked to the properties and assets recovered.
