Patna: Prime minister Narendra Modi is set to chair a high-level virtual meeting on Friday to review the evolving crisis in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Iran and the wider West Asian region.
Chief ministers from across India are expected to participate in the meeting, which will assess the country’s preparedness amid rising geopolitical tensions and their economic fallout. The discussion is also likely to emphasise coordination between the central and state governments in responding to emerging challenges.
State participation and Bihar’s role
Nitish Kumar will join the meeting virtually from Patna, connecting via video conferencing from his official residence. According to officials, preparations for the meeting have been completed at the state level.
Deputy chief ministers Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Sinha are also expected to be present. The Bihar government is likely to present feedback on the ground situation, including challenges related to supply chains and employment.
Focus on Iran and regional tensions
The meeting comes amid intensifying tensions involving Iran, with ongoing confrontations involving the United States and Israel continuing to impact global markets and supply routes.
Officials said the prime minister will provide an overview of steps taken so far, while discussions will also centre on future strategies to mitigate risks arising from the tensions.
Economic impact felt in states
The ripple effects of the crisis are already being felt in Bihar and other parts of India. LPG supplies have been disrupted, while maritime trade routes have faced uncertainty, affecting imports and exports.
Exports to Gulf countries have also been impacted, placing additional pressure on businesses and trade networks. Households are experiencing the consequences through rising costs and supply shortages.
Concerns over workers abroad
The situation has raised concerns for thousands of workers from Bihar employed in Gulf countries. Their safety and job security remain uncertain amid the escalating tensions.
Families back home are increasingly anxious, and the meeting is expected to address measures to ensure the protection of Indian nationals abroad.
Strategy and coordination
Ensuring stable LPG supplies, minimising trade disruptions and strengthening coordination between the centre and states are likely to be key agenda items.
The meeting is expected to shape India’s broader response strategy as geopolitical tensions continue to unfold, with both economic stability and citizen safety at the forefront of discussions.
