Motihari: The bodies of a young man and woman, tragically killed on the railway tracks in Motihari on Sunday morning, were left exposed for approximately two hours after local police and railway authorities engaged in an unseemly dispute over territorial jurisdiction.
The horrific incident unfolded near the Kunwarpur Chintawanpur Railway Halt. After villagers discovered the mutilated bodies—reportedly with their heads severed—and alerted authorities, both the Railway Police (GRP) and personnel from the Pipra Police Station arrived at the scene.
According to multiple reports, instead of prioritizing the immediate removal of the remains and launching a fast-tracked investigation, the two forces became locked in a dispute regarding whose jurisdiction the section of the track fell under. This internal “border dispute” led to a two-hour standoff, during which the deceased remained lying on the railway line, much to the distress of the local public.
Details of the Discovery
Witnesses at the scene suggested the couple might have fallen asleep on the tracks, leading to their demise. Authorities recovered several personal items, including a bag and the woman’s slippers at the station, while the man’s slippers were found near the bodies.
A tentative identification was made for the female victim based on an Aadhaar card recovered nearby. She was identified as Shobha Kumari (21), daughter of Dhora Das, a resident of Piprakhem village in the Kalyanpur police station area. However, the identity of the young man remains officially unconfirmed.
Sources indicated that, even after the delay, the police’s initial efforts were focused on formally resolving the territorial dispute between the Railway and Pipra police units rather than immediately establishing the identity of the unidentified male victim.
