Patna: Political speculation intensified in Bihar on Thursday amid reports that chief minister Nitish Kumar may step down from the state’s top post and move to the Rajya Sabha, potentially marking the end of an era that has spanned nearly two decades.
According to political sources, Nitish’s candidature for the Rajya Sabha is almost certain and he is expected to file his nomination later today. Union home minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Patna and is expected to be present when Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nitin Nabin and Nitish submit their nomination papers.
The reports have triggered intense political activity in the state capital, with leaders and party workers closely watching developments that could reshape Bihar’s political leadership.
Amid the speculation, workers of the Janata Dal (United) began gathering outside the chief minister’s official residence in Patna, expressing opposition to Nitish’s possible move to national politics. Security around the residence has been tightened as the crowd of supporters continued to grow.

Some JD(U) workers raised slogans urging Nitish to remain in Bihar. “Nitish Kumar belongs to Bihar. We will not let him go anywhere,” several supporters said, adding that they would protest against any decision that removes him from the chief minister’s post.
The reports have also drawn reactions from leaders within Nitish’s party. In Darbhanga, JD(U) minister Madan Sahni questioned the speculation surrounding the chief minister’s potential Rajya Sabha entry. “We do not believe that such a decision could have been taken by the chief minister. It is difficult to believe that he would make such a move on his own,” Sahni said.
Despite the political buzz, there has been no formal announcement from the JD(U) or the ruling National Democratic Alliance regarding Nitish’s nomination or any potential leadership transition in the state.
