Patna: The final day of the Bihar Assembly’s monsoon session descended into disorder on Friday, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sharply criticising opposition members—particularly those from the RJD and Congress—over their protest against voter list revisions.
The uproar began in both the Legislative Assembly and Council as opposition leaders entered the chambers dressed in black, raising slogans and disrupting proceedings. The protest, according to Nitish Kumar, was orchestrated at the behest of RJD leader Rabri Devi, whom he directly accused of leading the symbolic demonstration. “Everyone has worn the same black clothes on her instructions,” he said, visibly agitated.
As the protests continued, the chief minister condemned the slogan-shouting in the Legislative Council, calling the opposition “distressed” and “unwilling to listen”. When Rabri Devi countered, demanding answers for the people of Bihar, Kumar responded curtly: “When they should listen, they don’t.”
Despite efforts to restore order, the disruptions persisted. The Chairman of the Legislative Council was forced to adjourn proceedings until the lunch break. Earlier in the Assembly, Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav also suspended the session after just five minutes amid similar scenes.
Kumar expressed dismay at what he described as an unusual level of coordinated protest throughout the session. “Earlier, there used to be uproar for a day or two. But now they come in black clothes daily. Still, the people are benefiting from the work our government has done,” he said.
