Patna: Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport will begin operating entirely on green energy from June 15, becoming one of 94 airports across India to achieve 100% green energy usage.
Airport authorities said the transition is expected to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen environmental sustainability efforts. The airport has already been categorised as a ‘Green Airport’ following measures taken to increase the use of renewable energy.
Airport to Operate Entirely on Green Energy
Airport Director CP Dwivedi said Patna Airport currently generates around 90,000 units of electricity every month through solar power installations.
According to airport officials, this has resulted in savings of nearly Rs 9 lakh per month. In addition to on-site solar generation, electricity supplied through the state power network will also be sourced from solar energy. The airport administration has held consultations with the power department to facilitate the transition.
Passenger Traffic Sees Fourfold Growth
Patna Airport has recorded significant growth in passenger traffic, cargo handling, and aircraft movements over the past 12 years.
Data shared by the airport administration shows that passenger numbers increased from 1,167,538 in 2014 to 4,344,070 in 2025. During the same period, aircraft movements rose from 14,009 to 31,717.
Cargo operations also expanded considerably. The airport handled 5,198 metric tonnes of cargo in 2014-15, which increased to 13,987 metric tonnes in 2025-26, reflecting a growth of 169%.
Major Infrastructure Expansion
Several infrastructure projects have been completed over the past three years to support rising demand and improve operational efficiency.
In November 2023, the airport commissioned new Instrument Landing System (ILS), Doppler VHF Omnidirectional Range (DVOR), and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) systems. A modern Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower and Air Traffic Services (ATS) complex were also brought into operation.
The new domestic air cargo terminal became operational in February 2025, increasing cargo handling capacity.
In May 2025, the airport inaugurated a new integrated terminal building along with a multi-level car parking facility. Other additions include a new taxiway, isolation bay, parallel taxi track, and five additional aircraft parking stands.
Air Connectivity Expands Across India
Patna Airport’s network has expanded significantly since 2014. At that time, it offered direct connectivity to five major cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Ranchi.
The airport now operates flights to several additional destinations, including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Chandigarh, Pune, and Navi Mumbai.
Officials said the airport currently handles 42 arrivals and 42 departures every day.
Focus on Passenger Amenities
The airport has also introduced several facilities aimed at improving passenger experience.
These include DigiYatra services, Udaan passenger cafes, children’s play areas, Flybraries, upgraded Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile charging stations, and dedicated facilities for persons with disabilities.
Under the Airports Authority of India’s AVSAR initiative, local Jeevika self-help groups and artisans have also been provided space to showcase and sell their products, promoting local entrepreneurship alongside airport development.
