Patna: A cash collection agent was robbed of Rs 20 lakh by armed assailants in broad daylight in Patna on Monday, in an incident that has raised concerns over urban security.
The robbery took place near Alpana Market under the jurisdiction of Patliputra police station, where four men riding two motorcycles intercepted the agent, who was travelling on a scooter.
The victim, identified as Pankaj Kumar, is employed with Radian Cash Management Services Limited and was on his way to deposit cash at a Central Bank of India branch on Boring Road after collecting money from shops in the Patliputra area.
Police said the incident occurred at around 3pm when Kumar, carrying nearly Rs 20 lakh in his scooter’s storage compartment, was stopped by the assailants near a lane leading towards A N College. One of the attackers blocked his path while another allegedly pointed a firearm at him.
The men reportedly threatened the agent and forced him to open the scooter’s storage compartment. When he resisted, they warned him of dire consequences before taking the bag containing the cash and fleeing towards Boring Road.
Officers from the Patliputra police station reached the scene soon after receiving information and began an investigation. CCTV footage from the area is being examined to identify the suspects and trace the motorcycles used in the crime.
A police response team also conducted inquiries with local residents as part of the initial investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest that the attackers may have carried out prior reconnaissance, as the agent was transporting cash collected over two days. Investigators believe the assailants may have been aware of the amount or had been tracking his movements.
Police officials said efforts are under way to identify and arrest those involved.
